Medals galore for Baggio at champs

Max Baggio [2010] will need a bigger case on his return from the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships – after securing six medals from eight events.

The Harpenden skier claimed one gold, four silver and a bronze at the championships in the French resort of Tignes, which decided both national and junior titles. His one success came in the junior downhill where he went one better than the senior race.

The super G, a similar event to the downhill, saw the 20-year-old pick up silvers in both age groups while the giant slalom races saw him come away with a silver and a bronze. Unfortunately he failed to finish in both slalom events.

Speaking after winning gold in the downhill, Baggio said: “It’s a good feeling. I was happy with the top section of my run, I came to the Rossignol jump and then there was a compression and I got a bit low and late there but apart from that I was happy with it.

“When I crossed the finish line I thought my time was probably good enough to win although there is always a chance the other guys could have caught me. “I’m happy with how I’ve done in all the speed events this week. I was happy with my downhill run [in the senior race] even though it was only second place – it was solid.” The championships are the biggest event of the year for the British ski racing world and Delancey are the principal sponsor for the sixth year running.
