Tragic death of a much loved student, Liana Hoyland [2015].

A 19-year-old university student has died after collapsing outside a nightclub. Liana Hoyland, a Nottingham University student who was originally from the Harpenden area, died in hospital in the early hours of Saturday (20) after spending the night at nightclub Rescue Rooms in Nottingham.

The cause of death has not been confirmed but a spokeswoman for DHP Family, which owns Rescue Rooms, said that she lost consciousness following a fall. She added that the CCTV footage showed Liana losing her footing, which caused her to fall forwards and hit her head on the wooden patio.

The on-site medic from a neighbouring venue, Rock City, administered first aid and performed CPR. The medic then used a defibrillator until the ambulance service arrived. The ambulance crew continued with the defibrillator and took Liana to hospital where she died. The spokeswoman said: “We wish to pass on our heartfelt condolences to the young woman’s family and friends for this very tragic and sad accident. Our thoughts are with them at this time.”

Liana was a student at Roundwood Park School where she was a school captain for ‘Environment’. Alan Henshall, headteacher at the school, said: “The students and staff of Roundwood Park were devastated to hear the news of Liana’s death. “She was described by all those who knew her well as a bubbly, enthusiastic young woman who always had a great sense of humour. “She was particularly kind and supportive to her many friends and she was thoughtful, warm and deeply caring. “She excelled academically and one of her teachers described her as ‘one of the most conscientious and dedicated students we have ever had,’ and another as ‘vibrant’ and ‘wholeheartedly involved in everything she did’. We will all miss her immeasurably.”

She was studying Psychology at the University of Nottingham. A spokeswoman for the university said: “The university has been notified of the sad death of a first year undergraduate student. We are supporting fellow students and staff at this difficult time and our thoughts, of course, are with the student’s family.”

A police spokesperson said that the cause of death had yet to be established and enquiries were ongoing.
