Welcome to the Sixth Form
Roundwood Park has a strong and successful Sixth Form. We have an impressive record of achievement at A Level and BTEC Level 3, with the majority of our students going on to Higher Education, including a number of applicants to Oxbridge each year.
The outstanding success of the school’s two-year A Level and BTEC Level 3 programme is recognised throughout Hertfordshire and beyond.
Matching students’ needs to relevant courses is central to our work. Our collaboration with Harpenden’s Sir John Lawes School and St George’s School has further enhanced the subject options for our students.
In addition to the range of A levels and level 3 BTECs, we also offer students in Year 12 the opportunity to take the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), LIBF finance qualification, Sports Leaders Award, Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) and Core Maths. The EPQ is recognised by Oxbridge, Medical and Veterinary Colleges, Russell Group Universities and all HE institutions. It is particularly beneficial in preparation for HE interviews. It involves a student driven research project beyond your studies which can demonstrate higher level academic thinking, advanced research skills and an in-depth study of a particular subject that intrigues you. Where it is relevant, GCSE re-sits are offered in Level 2 English and Maths. Need for this will be identified at the point of enrolment in Year 12.
A full and varied Sixth Form leads to a successful and well-rounded young adult who is then able to move purposefully on to the next stage, whilst recognising that education is for life, not solely for results. As students move through the Sixth Form and witness the challenges of entry into Higher Education, employment, apprenticeship, training or gap years, they are assured of expert guidance from experienced subject staff and tutors.
Opportunities available are continually reviewed. As well as academic study, we encourage our students to take an active involvement in school and community life. We have a dedicated careers programme (Future Options) where students engage with local businesses and are encouraged to take a work placement in our work experience week. We also offer a diverse and detailed tutorial programme which includes PSHCE curriculum, study skills, mindset and matters of wellbeing. All Year 12 students receive a one-hour tutorial each week. Our Student Leadership Group (SLG) lead change across the school and all Sixth Formers are encouraged to accept responsibility for areas of school life. We regard our students as important representatives and role models for the school and, unfailingly, they represent us well. A wide range of extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities are available, including community, music and sporting activities. Students enthusiastically involve themselves in such activities. Members of the Sixth Form have a recently upgraded, purpose built Common Room and Study Area for their exclusive use.
At Roundwood Park School we offer a dynamic and challenging experience for all our Sixth Form students.
