Drama
We are very proud of what we offer our students and the local community, in terms of the public performance of student work. Since returning to a form of normality post lockdown, we are reopening what we offer all year groups in terms of extra-curricular drama. It is fantastic to be able to prepare our full school musical again this year.
At Roundwood Park we have established a good tradition of termly performances, whole school productions, showcases and public airings of all exam work. Clubs which focus on performance as well as stage design elements are offered to all year groups and are run by our exam year drama students as well as our staff.
We are looking forward to running drama trips again this year and have already had 2 workshops from world renowned theatre companies: Frantic Assembly and Complicite for years 10 – 13. We get involved in the annual National Theatre Connections festival, which focuses predominantly on year 9 and leads to them performing in the Royal and Derngate theatre in Northampton. We also offer individual workshops for those wanting to audition for the National youth Theatre.
Music
The school is rightly proud of its students’ musical accomplishments. There are numerous groups, which anyone can join from beginners to experts! They include choirs, an orchestra, a flute choir, stage band, a guitar group and a string ensemble. All children are encouraged to learn an instrument or develop their singing skills and the school has an extensive array of musical instruments.
We have many performance opportunities for students to showcase their musical passions. These vary from a summer concert to smaller intimate recitals. We also have a whole school musical event of House Music, which has grown in popularity so much it now has to be performed at The Alban Arena. The in school extra-curricular groups also play at various local events as well as taking part in termly performance opportunities at school, Harpenden Carnival, St. John’s Church and Harpenden Public Halls.
Art
We cover a wide range of skills and media in Art from Year 7 onwards. Students are encouraged to develop these skills further during lunchtime clubs. We have specific days for exam groups to develop and discuss their work further.
Professional artists often visit the school to share their experience and provide workshops. A life drawing course is available after school for AS and A level students. Annual visits to Paris are organised for GCSE art students. There are also gallery and museum visits closer to home for other age groups. In the past, A Level students have visited New York, Paris and Barcelona, and similar visits are proposed for the future.
Students’ work is displayed in the studios and around the school throughout the year. In the summer term we have exhibitions of GCSE, AS and A level work, which are open to the public.
PE
At Roundwood Park we offer a wide array of sporting clubs both at lunchtime and after school. We organise these activities with a termly extra-curricular timetable where activity, venue and staff details are made available to students.
