German
In German, students study a range of topics which develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. Each unit of work builds on previous learning and prepares students for study at GCSE.
Students are helped to develop a range of techniques for effective learning so that they can build up their own vocabulary as efficiently and as independently as possible.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9)
Year 7: Describing yourself, Family and pets, Free time activities, Life at school
Year 8: Holidays, TV & media, Healthy living, Class trips
Year 9: Role models, Music & festivals, Professions, Contrasting life at primary school to life at secondary school, The environment
Key Stage 4 GCSE (Years 10 & 11): Edexcel
Students study topics under the following broad headings:
- School
- Identity and Culture
- Local area, holiday and travel
- Future aspirations, study and work
- International and global dimension
They are assessed at the end of the two year course via exams in Speaking (25%), Listening (25%), Reading & Translation (25%), Writing & Translation (25%).
Key Stage 5 A Level (Years 12 & 13): AQA
Students study a range of topics under the following themes:
- Aspects of German-speaking society
- Artistic culture in the German-speaking world
- Film: Das Leben der Anderen (2006) Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
- Aspects of German-speaking society: current issues
- Aspects of political life in the German-speaking world
- Play: Der Besuch der alten Dame (1956) Friedrich Dürrenmatt
